Recruit Or Sponsor?

The Definitions

American Heritage defines a sponsor as:  One who assumes responsibility for another person or a group during a period of instruction, apprenticeship, or probation.

A recruiter is defined as someone who supplies or enlists new members or employees for an organization or group.

In other words, a sponsor has to recruit, but a recruiter does not have to sponsor. The sponsor is genuinely concerned about other people, whereas the recruiter is primarily concerned with his own welfare.

Isn’t Recruiting Good For The Company?

The recruiter is only signing people up into his program du jour, like throwing mud against the wall and watching to see what sticks, never taking responsibility for making it stick, but only watching and waiting to see who does stick.

Recruiting leads to an ill-informed group of participants that are oversold on the merits of the business and uninformed about the expenses and sustainability of the behavior. Companies with heavy recruitment cultures flame out within a few years (or several if they’re lucky), or worse, get shut down.

Sponsoring Is Win/Win For Everyone

Sponsoring is about taking personal responsibility for the new participants in the business, ensuring they have a good understanding of the responsibilities associated with owning their own business, educating them about the product and mentoring them along the way as they make sales and sponsor other participants. Sponsoring is about caring and education. It creates a win/win relationship between the sponsor and the enrollee.

A sponsors makes a personal commitment to those people he sponsors into the business. As the new business partner grows into the business and begins to succeed, the relationship between the sponsor and the new partner will change, but the desire to help or assist will never diminish.

Sponsoring is good for the new business partner, it’s good for the sponsor because those he sponsors have a far higher probability of developing an income and sticking it out through the learning curve, and it’s good for the company as they get a well-trained and responsible sales force that will help them grow for years to come.

Who Is Successful In Network Marketing?

I am currently reading a book by David Nelson called Create Your Fortune In Network Marketing. I want to share a little bit of it with you as I found this very interesting as it does answer the question I posed, who is successful in network marketing?

Let me introduce him to you. David has been a full-time, network marketing professional for over 20 years. He has a successful track record as a distributor and trainer. He’s had over 100 articles published in industry trade publications. David has a total commitment to network marketing and the viability of network marketing as a home based business enterprise for part-timers and newcomers, and not just the select few full-time recruiters. Because of this philosophy, Cutting Edge Media labeled David the “Protector of the Part-Timer.” He is also a contributing author for Network Marketing Magazine.

The Road Not Taken

In his book, David quotes from a well-known poem by Robert Frost called The Road Not Taken. David uses it to illustrate a choice that network marketers make between focusing on the product, or focusing on the opportunity.

However, I think it applies equally well to the choice that people who want to be self-employed make between traditional businesses and network marketing. Consider that as of April 2009, there were 154,731,000 in the civilian workforce. Most estimates place the number of network marketers between 6 million and 15 million.

Characteristics of Successful Network Marketers

“Here are some characteristics that help people become successful network marketers. They are not in order of priority or importance…

1. Have a white-hot desire to make money.
2. Like people and are genuinely interested in them.
3. Can empathize with others and understand their point of view.
4. Are willing to help others achieve their goals.
5. Are entrepreneurial minded.
6. Have a high energy level and like to be doing things.
7. Take initiative.
8. Have discipline.
9. Are willing to make a sacrifice for a future.
10. Have the skills to organize their time and money in order to accomplish goals.
11. Don’t allow rejection to be personal.
12. Are interested in personal growth and development.
13. Have good communication skills – listening as well as talking.
14. Make and keep commitments.
15. Work with a sense of urgency.
16. Have a high level of self-esteem and self-confidence.
17. Have a positive mental attitude and a winner’s mentality.
18. Are willing to learn from others.
19. Are good teachers, trainers, and motivators.
20. Are consistent and persistent in working toward goals.
21. Are not looking for a “free lunch.”
22. Are team players.
23. Have had success in other areas of life.
24. Seek an improved lifestyle.
25. Place a priority on time freedom
26. Are proactive – take initiative and responsibility to produce desired results.
27. Are ambitious.
28. Are honest, moral, and ethical.
29. Will follow-up and follow-through.”
